Who do they regulate? Which areas of the media? The Press Complaints Commission is an independent body which deals with complaints from members of the public about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines.
Are they Regulatory OR Self-Regulatory? The PCC is a self regulatory body.
Criminal Law And Civil Law- The difference? The different between the two is that, Criminal law is a crime against the justice system, where someone has committed a crime which is considered to be wrong, and will then be justice system, if found guilty for the crime in question they will have to serve a prison sentence in the appropriate way, where as Civil Law is there is a disagreement between two individuals, companies or organisation, where something such as one suing the other will that place at the civil court, and will be settled by one paying the other.

Copyright, What is copyright? What can you actually copyright and How does this protect you as the author of text or images?
Copyright is where someone has the right to claim their work for their own, and stop it being used by other people unfairly, such as a video on the internet is easily copied, however if it is copyrighted then they can sue people for using it. You can copy right pretty much anything in the media, photos, writing, videos ect, this is to insure the rightful person gets the credit for it. For an author this protect them by is their work is uploaded to the internet by someone else they have to put the name of the original author by it, there for showing their work more, if they don’t do this it a breach of the copyright.

AUDIENCE The term Audience refers to the group of People that watch or listen to a specific Televison or Radio programme (either private or public), a theatre performance, Music and even to the groups of people that read a Book.

The Advertising Standards Authority is an indepentdant Body that has been set up, and paid for, by the Advertising Industry to ensure that any advertising is Legal, Decent Honest and Truthful. These Guidlines apply to both what is said in an advertisement andalso what is shown in an advertisement.
BROADCASTERS AUDIENCE RESEARCH BOARD (BARB) The Broadcasters Audience Research Board is an independent research body, set up and funded by the BBC and the commercials channels, that is responsible for monitoring and measuring TV viewing figures.
BRITISH BOARD OF FILM CLASSIFICATION (BBFC) The British Board of Film Classification is an independant body set up by the film industry in 1912 in order to bring a degree of uniformity to the classification of film. Although the BBFC have some power over which ratings a film recieves the Local Councils are still able to over rule the Decision. This means that the Council may decide to pass a film that the Board has banned or ban a film that the Board has passed.
BROADCASTING The term broadcasting refers to the method of sending information over a network. With broadcasting, data comes from one source and goes to all other connected sources. For example a Television Studio may Broadcast a Film on Channel 5 which will then appear on every Television that is switched to that specific channel.

A company which makes more that £250,ooo and it mulitnational.
COMPANY SIZE: BIG TO MEDIUM SIZED
A big to medium sized company is entitled to certain filing exemptions because it meets two out of three of the following criteria for the current and preceding year, or the two preceding financial years: • the company's net worth should not exceed £11.4 million; • the turnover should not exceed £22.8 million • the average number of employees should not exceed 250.

When an organization owns more than one type of media company, for example a newspaper and a television station
HORIZONTAL INTEGRATION Horizontal Integration involves the merging of Companies and Organisations that operate on a similar level. For example two companies that produce the same types of Products may decide to merge or two Companies that both work within the same stage of the Supply chain.
INSTITUTION An Instituation is an organization that has been founded for a specific purpose. For example a Hospital is an Institution founded to specifically look after the sick. The term may sometimes apply to an establishment which consists of a building or a group of buildings where the promotion for a cause is situated.
NEW MEDIA INDUSTRY The term New Media refers to the different forms of communicationg in the digital world. This includes things like electronic publishing (either on CD,DVD, Digital TV and also the Internet). it also includes the use of both portable and Desktop Computers and both Handheld and Wireless devices.
NARROWCASTING The term Narrowcasting refers to the distribution of information by either Radio or Television to a small specified audience, rather than the general public. Some types of narrowcasting involve directional signals or use of encryption. Narrowcasting involves aiming advertising at specific groups of people, defined by values, preferences, or demographic attributes.
NATIONAL READERSHIP SURVEY (NRS) The National Readership Survey is an Oranisation set up to provide estimates of the readership size of Britains most important Newspapers and Magazines. In order to work out the pattern in readership, The NRS interview a large sample of around 36,000 adults (aged 15+) each year. Interviews are conducted at home on a face to face basis.
OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS (OFCOM) Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, with responsibilities across television, radio, telecommunications and wireless communications services. PRESS
COMPLAINTS COMMISSION (PCC) The PCC is an independant Organisation which deals with any complaints made about the editorial content of Newspapers and Magazines from members of the Public.
PRIVATE OWNERSHIP The term Private Ownership covers all Companies and Organizations that are owned by People who are not part of the Government of a Country.
PUBLIC OWNERSHIP Public Ownership is when the Government owns around 51% of a Companies shareholding. Complete Public Ownership is known as Nationalization.
PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING PBS refers to broadcasting intended for the public benefit rather than for purely commercial concerns. The communications regulator Ofcom, requires that certain television and radio broadcasters fulfil certain requirements as part of their licence to broadcast. For example, all of the BBC's television and radio stations have a public service remit, including those that broadcast digitally.
REGULATORY BODY A regulatory Body is an independent organization, usually established by government, that regulates the activities of companies in an industry.
SELF-REGULATORY BODY A self-regulatory body is an organization that sets its own rules for fair conduct, licenses or approves firms engaging in market making activities, and supervises the activities of market participants.
VERTICAL INTEGRATION Vertical Integration is when Companies at different levels of production and distribution in the same industry merge together. When a firm acquires its input supplier it is called backward integration, when it acquires firms in its output distribution chain it is called forward integration. For example, a vertically integrated oil firm may end up owning oilfields, refineries, tankers, trucks, and fuel stations.
